What is JENOLITE Chalkboard Paint?

It is a matt black coating that turns correctly prepared surfaces into writable chalkboard surfaces.

Can I write on it with normal chalk?

Yes. Traditional chalk is the recommended writing medium.

Can I erase the chalk afterwards?

Yes. Once fully cured, chalk can be removed with a dry or slightly damp cloth.

Can I use liquid chalk markers?

Yes, but test them first. Some liquid chalk markers may leave residue or staining.

How long before I can write on it?

Allow approximately 24 hours for full cure before using chalk.

How many coats should I apply?

Apply at least 2–3 coats for good coverage and durability.

How long between coats?

Around 1–2 hours.

How quickly is it touch dry?

Approximately 30 minutes under suitable conditions.

How far away should I spray?

Use approximately 25–30cm.

Does it need primer?

For best results, Jenolite recommends applying the aerosol to a primed surface.

Can I use it on wood?

Yes. Wood is suitable when correctly prepared and primed where necessary.

Can it be used on MDF?

Yes. Because MDF is absorbent, priming first will generally provide a more even finish.

Can it be used on metal?

Yes, on correctly prepared metal.

Can it be used on glass?

Yes, but glass is very smooth, so thorough cleaning, keying where practical and testing adhesion first are sensible.

Can it be used on plastic?

Yes, on compatible plastic. Plastic types vary, so test adhesion and use a suitable plastic primer where required.

Can I use it on plaster or drywall?

Yes. Ensure the surface is sound, dry and suitably primed first.

Can I make a whole wall into a chalkboard?

Yes, although for larger areas the 500ml brush/roller tin may be more practical than the aerosol.

Can I use it on furniture?

Yes. Tables, cupboard fronts, drawers, doors and other correctly prepared furniture surfaces can be transformed into writable areas.

Can I use it for café menu boards?

Yes. Menu boards and signage are ideal applications.

Can I use it for scoreboards?

Yes.

Can I repaint an old blackboard?

Yes. Clean, lightly sand and prepare the old surface before recoating.

Can it be used outdoors?

Outdoor durability will depend on exposure. I would avoid applying ordinary clear lacquer over the actual writing area unless it has been confirmed to retain chalk writability and erasability.

Is it suitable for children's projects?

The finished chalkboard can be used for appropriate household and educational projects once fully cured, but the aerosol itself must be applied by an adult or competent user in accordance with the safety instructions. During spraying it is extremely flammable and must be used outdoors or in a well-ventilated area.

Is it non-toxic?

The cured surface is intended for general chalkboard use, but the wet aerosol carries important solvent and flammability hazards during application.

400ml Aerosol

1. Prepare the surface. Ensure it is clean, dry, sound and free from dust, oil, grease, wax and loose material.

2. Sand where required. Lightly key glossy or very smooth surfaces to improve adhesion.

3. Prime for best results. The Jenolite aerosol instructions specifically recommend applying to a primed surface.

4. Shake thoroughly. Shake the aerosol for at least 2 minutes.

5. Spray from 25–30cm. Use smooth overlapping passes and keep the can moving.

6. Apply 2–3 light coats. Build coverage gradually rather than applying one heavy wet coat.

7. Allow to recoat. Leave approximately 1–2 hours between coats.

8. Allow to cure. The surface is typically touch dry in around 30 minutes, but leave for 24 hours before writing on it with chalk.

9. Use traditional chalk. This gives the easiest writing and erasing performance.

10. Test liquid chalk markers first. Some markers may leave staining or residue.

11. Clean gently. Use a dry or slightly damp cloth. Avoid harsh cleaners that may damage the writable surface.

12. Clear the nozzle. Invert the can after use and briefly spray to reduce nozzle blockage.

500ml Tin

1. Apply directly to a cool surface
Stir well before use, so that a smooth, uniform mix is obtained. Brush on in smooth strokes. Coat the surface with a maximum of 2 even layers, allowing 20 minutes to dry between layers.

2. Allow to dry
Allow at least 4 hours before use, full cure/hardness is obtained after 12 hours.
