1. What is JENOLITE Original Rust Remover used for?

JENOLITE Original Rust Remover is a fast-acting, liquid rust treatment that chemically dissolves rust, taking the surface back to bare metal. It’s ideal for removing rust from tools, automotive components, bikes, machinery, garden furniture, and more — leaving metal clean, smooth, and ready to prime or paint.

2. How does it work?

The formula reacts chemically with iron oxide (rust), breaking it down and lifting it from the metal surface. Once the rust has turned dark grey, it can be easily wiped or brushed away, revealing clean, bare metal beneath.

3. What’s the difference between JENOLITE Rust Remover and Rust Converter?

  • Rust Remover physically removes rust, returning the surface to bare metal — perfect when you want a clean base before priming or painting.
  • Rust Converter chemically stabilises rust, turning it into a primed surface ready for painting, without removing it.

4. What types of metal can it be used on?

It is suitable for all ferrous metals (iron and steel). It should not be used on non-ferrous metals such as aluminium, brass, or galvanised steel, as it may cause surface damage or discolouration.

5. Can it be used on painted surfaces?

No. It must be applied directly onto rusted, exposed metal. Any loose paint or coatings should be removed before application for the product to work effectively.

6. How do I apply JENOLITE Rust Remover Liquid?

  1. Preparation: Remove oil, grease, dirt, and loose rust using a wire brush or steel wool.
  2. Apply: Shake the bottle well and spray directly onto the rusted area. Work into pitted areas, corners, and edges using a brush for full coverage.
  3. Keep active: Rework with a brush every 5 minutes and reapply if necessary — don’t allow the surface to dry out.
  4. Remove residue: When the rust turns dark grey, wipe dry and brush away residue.
  5. Prime: Wait 30 minutes, then apply primer or paint the same day.

7. How long does the process take?

The active rust removal process typically takes between 15 and 30 minutes, depending on the severity of rust and environmental conditions. For heavy corrosion, multiple applications may be required.

8. Do I need to rinse the surface after use?

No rinsing is necessary. Simply wipe the surface dry with a clean, lint-free cloth, then allow 30 minutes before priming or painting.

9. What should the rust look like once the product has worked?

The rusted surface will change colour to dark grey, indicating that the chemical reaction is complete and the rust has been neutralised and loosened for removal.

10. Can it be used for dipping or immersion?

Yes. The liquid formula can be applied by spray, brush, or immersion, making it ideal for small tools, metal parts, and components that can be fully submerged.

11. What if rust remains after the first treatment?

If traces of rust are still visible, repeat the process — reapply, keep the surface active, and brush until all rust has been dissolved and the metal appears clean.

12. How do I know when the metal is ready to paint?

Once the surface is clean, grey, and free from rust residue, allow it to dry for 30 minutes before applying JENOLITE Primer or a suitable metal paint.

13. What is the coverage area?

A 1 Litre bottle covers approximately 8 square metres, depending on surface texture and rust severity.

14. Can it be used on vehicles or machinery?

Yes. It’s excellent for automotive restoration and maintenance, including car bodywork, chassis, wheel arches, bike frames, and tools. It’s also ideal for boats, trailers, and machinery.

15. Is it safe for vertical or overhead surfaces?

Yes, but vertical surfaces require more attention. Keep the product active by brushing regularly and reapplying to prevent it from drying out.

16. Should I wear protective equipment when using it?

Yes. Always wear gloves and eye protection, and work in a well-ventilated area. Avoid prolonged contact with skin or painted surfaces, as staining may occur.

17. What happens if it splashes onto paint or skin?

If splashes occur, wash immediately with clean water to prevent staining or irritation.

18. Can I reuse leftover liquid?

Do not return used or contaminated liquid to the container, as it may weaken the product or cause premature reaction inside the bottle.

19. How should I store it?

Store in a cool, well-ventilated area, away from frost, direct sunlight, and heat sources. Keep the container tightly closed when not in use.

20. Where is it made?

JENOLITE Original Rust Remover Liquid is Made in Britain, trusted by professionals since 1939 for effective rust removal and metal restoration.

Remove all traces of oil or grease. Remove old paint and loose rust with steel wool or wire brush. Always check product compatibility. If in doubt test a small area first.

1. Apply directly to rust
Shake the bottle well, open the trigger spray to your desired formation and spray directly onto the rusted area. To ensure a full coverage, work well into any pitted areas, corners and edges using a brush. Ensure that exposed corners and edges are well-treated to avoid rust creep beneath.

Keep Jenolite active by working in with a brush every 5 minutes and adding more if required. Do not allow the surface to dry out or become tacky. Vertical surfaces may require the most attention.

Continue this process until all visible rust has turned dark grey in colour, at which point, wipe the surface dry with a clean, lint-free cloth. To ensure all rust has been successfully removed, brush away the dark grey residue with a wire brush/steel wool (if rust is still present thereafter, repeat the process as above until all rust has been removed).

2. Ready to prime in 30 minutes
After wiping dry, wait for 30 minutes, then apply Jenolite Primer or topcoat. For best results, prime same day.

Do not return excess Jenolite Rust Remover to the container.

Wash brushes and equipment in clean water immediately after use. Splashes onto surrounding paintwork and skin may cause staining - wash off immediately with water.
